LHRC joins other stakeholders in commemorating World Press Freedom Day 2023.
Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) on 3rd May 2023, joined other stakeholders in Tanzania to commemorate the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom, taking part in several activities, including legal aid activities and panel discussions organized.
The commemoration, which at the national level took place in Zanzibar, began on May 1 and concluded on May 3, 2023, at the Golden Tulip Hotel in the semi-autonomous archipelago.
Zanzibar Minister for Information, Youth, Culture, and Sports Tabia Mwita Maulid inaugurated the commemoration. Zanzibar President Hussein Mwinyi closed it.
At the commemoration, LHRC participated in the discussion of policy and legal systems in the country’s journalism and communication sector. Ms. Tabia also visited the LHRC pavilion when she arrived at the venue.
This year’s theme for World Press Freedom Day was “Shaping a future of rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights.”
LHRC used the occasion to hand over its Tanzania Human Rights Report 2022 to President Mwinyi.
Addressing participants of the commemoration, Dr . Mwinyi said press freedom is very vital to any country’s developments, assuring stakeholders of his government’s commitment to upholding the principle.
