LHRC and Anti -FGM Tanzania Network Call for Stronger Laws to End FGM
On February 6, 2024, Legal and Human Rights (LHRC), in collaboration with the Tanzania Network to End Female Genital Mutilation, held a press conference at the LHRC HQ in Dar es Salaam, where they issued the following recommendations to eradicate FGM in the country:
The network advises the enactment and passage of legislation to prohibit FGM, aiming to protect adult women who undergo the practice.
They suggest amending the Marriage Act of 1971, particularly concerning the age of marriage for girls, as early marriage significantly contributes to the prevalence of FGM among girls.
Additionally, they propose improvements to the law to hold traditional leaders and parents accountable for their involvement in FGM.
