LHRC has condemned in strongest terms the killing of Dr. Isack Daniel Athuman.
Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) has condemned in strongest terms the killing of Dr. Isack Daniel Athuman, a medical officer in charge of the Nyangoto Health Centre in Tarime, Mara region.
According to reports, Dr. Athuman was hacked to death by unknown assailants on May 3, 2023, on his way home after work. His attackers are still at large as pressure mounts on law enforcement officers to launch an investigation into the incident.
LHRC said in a statement that it was joining other organisations, which include the Medical Association of Tanzania (MAT), in condemning the senseless killing of the medical doctor, urging Tanzanians not to take matters into their hands when it comes to dispensing justice.
LHRC, which was informed of the incident on May 05, 2023, reminded Tanzanians of the Rule of Law principle, naming the Judiciary as the only organ responsible for dispensing justice in the country.
“LHRC condemns the killings that are going on in the country because those events are taking away the right to live,” the organisation stated in a press release.
“The Tanzania Human Rights Report 2022 shows the presence of several incidents of murder done by various people, including unknown people as well as incidents of taking the law into their own hands,” it added.
“The incidents have been reported from various areas in the country, including the Mara region,” LHRC said.
It called on citizens to stop the actions of brutality and to continue to protect and respect human rights.
LHRC joined other actors who have called on the Tanzanian Police Force to launch an investigation into the incident and bring its perpetrators to book.
